acres in state managed St. Sebastian Buffer Preserve. The property
contains endangered xeric scrub habitat, pine flatwoods, dry
prairie and wetlands. This project helps to protect the St.
Sebastian River watershed and provides habitat for rare bird
species including the Florida Scrub-Jay, Southern Bald Eagle
and Red-Cockaded Woodpecker. Other wildlife that you may encounter
on the site include bobcats, turkey, deer, river otters, sandhill
cranes and gopher tortoises. Several species of rare plants
are also found on the site. A variety of wading birds, including
wood storks and roseate spoonbills, use the property seasonally.
Recreational opportunities are allowed in accordance with the Buffer Preserve rules and regulations. Activities include horseback riding, hiking, primitive camping at designated sites, off-road bicycling, canoeing, boating, studying nature and fishing. To ensure public safety and environmental protection, the following are not allowed: firearms and trapping devices; motorized vehicles (except on designated roads and parking areas) including motorcycles and off-road, all -terrain and track vehicles; removal of plants or animals, or archaeological or cultural resources. The Preserve is open from 8am to 5pm daily and is located on County Road 512, just west of the County Road 510 and 512 intersection.
