| Statement of Function
It is the purpose of this department to establish and implement a comprehensive planning program to guide and control future development within Indian River County. The planning process is intended to promote, protect and improve public health, safety, appearance and general welfare; prevent overcrowding of land and avoid undue concentration of population; facilities, housing and other required services, and conserve, develop, utilize and protect natural resources within the County. The Community Development Department coordinates all activities under the County Planning, Environmental Planning and Code Enforcement and Building Divisions. This department also acts as the principal administrator of the area’s Metropolitan Planning Organization.

In support of the National Flood Insurance Program, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
has undertaken an effort of flood hazard identification
and mapping to update Flood Insurance Rate Maps
